His student aide and vice president always make it a point to tease Rollo for his admiration for Sebek's acting, telling Sebek that the only time he's ever missed summer classes ("Summer classes?? That's kind of sad." "Ruggie how about we NOT provoke the guy who's letting us stay over.") was when he found out that Sebek came back to the Shaftlands. He was there in the audience on his first day.

Rook is DEFINITELY not letting this go. "Monsieur Crocodile dabbles in the theatrical arts? Why, how come I've never heard of this before!" "You stalk people, how have you NOT."

alright more pre-crash yellowjackets thoughts! this time: shitty high school jobs they had! (i worked 5 different shitty minimum wage jobs between the ages of 15-18 and have thought about the concept with more gravity than it deserves sorry)

shauna: was a tutor during the school year for literally every subject. she was the only reason jeff and randy passed their junior year. even though she could use the money, shauna never charged any of her teammates if they needed some help. when school was out during the summers, she had a seasonal job at the concession stand at the local concert venue. pretty easy money and she liked listening to the bands play

jackie: unemployed. being the coolest girl in school is a full time job, after all! note: tried to get a job with shauna at the concession stand. it was a complete and utter disaster. she lasted a week, and only made it that long because of how much shauna covered for her. after that didn’t pan out, when shauna worked weekends, jackie would always buy a concert ticket… just to hang out by the concession stand and talk with shauna for the whole show

nat: her first job was working at the local pizza parlor. was employed there for 6 months until it got shut down because, as it turns out, the whole thing was a money laundering front for the mob (which explains why nat never got fired despite being actually kinda bad at making pizzas). after that, she goes to work the 6pm-midnight shift at the grimiest gas station in wiskayok. except for the occasional stick up, it was a quiet job where no one bothered her and she could buy her own cigarettes. however she was constantly sleep-deprived having to get up for school in the mornings. definitely created energy drink concoctions that would send most people into cardiac arrest. van and the other yellowjackets would always stop by to see her on shifts and nat always gives them free slurpees

van: started working at the movie theater in the mall when she was 14 (the owner needed the help and did not ask enough questions). van is the rare sort of person that is absolutely beloved by both customers and her fellow employees and no one was surprised when she became a manager. she has the best customer service and will help out all the other employees with whatever they need. to this day she still holds the record for most Employee of the Month awards. also i just know van was the ultimate hookup and snuck her friends into shows and definitely took home the leftover popcorn after her shift. if she knew nat was on shift at the gas station, she’d stop by on her way home and give her some

taissa: never worked during the school year because she took way too many classes and extracurriculars (she was a 3-sport athlete: cross country in the fall, basketball in the winter, soccer in the spring. also did debate team AND student gov). her parents actually tried to talk her out of getting a summer job, but taissa has never relaxed a day in her life. she took a job at a clothing store in the mall and claimed she chose it for the employee discounts. the fact the store was located in the same mall as the movie theater was unrelated to anything whatsoever (tho taissa and van’s break schedules coincidentally always lined up and they’d hang out and go to the arcade where they’d have competitions… loser had to buy the winner food from the food court afterwards).

anyways tai would have been a perfect employee… if she didn’t have the world’s worst customer service (“for the fifth and final time, i am not going to give you a goddamned refund if you don’t have the RECEIPT and if you try putting that ugly ass blouse in my face again i will shove it up your-”) …had to have routine talks with HR throughout her tenure there. her manager gently suggested therapy, once.

lottie: didn’t need the money but definitely got a job out of boredom. decided to lifeguard as a summer job. it was basically getting paid to tan and tell kids to stop running. she had a sixth sense for when it’s about to start storming. her coworkers stopped questioning it after a few months and now when lottie says to get everyone out of the pool, they get everyone out of the pool. from lifeguarding lottie actually learned enough about pool maintenance to do the work and check the chemical balances on the pool at her own house. her father thinks the whole thing is ridiculous, her mother thinks it’s nice she has a hobby

laura lee: didn’t work a paid job but volunteered. she played piano for the local church services and on weekdays she worked evenings at the local food bank. if she sees anyone from school show up, it stays between her and God. she has managed to rope each of the yellowjackets into volunteering with her at least once

mari: worked at a local restaurant. tried to be a waitress, but on her very first day she got three different customer complaints about her attitude and so the owner put her in the kitchen where she became a linecook. she had more healthcode violations in her 1.5 years of working there than every other employee combined. the manager fired her on a weekly basis but she always just showed up to work the next day like nothing happened and the boss always took her back because mari is the best damn linecook he ever had

akilah: she’s a baby and was too young to work an actual job but definitely did babysitting (mostly for family). definitely was the kid-whisperer. had plans to work at library once she turned 16

i'll never forget the time i first met quinn. the night felt like a scene from the romance books i read.

i decided to attend a umich hockey game because i was starting to get tired of reading the same highlighted words over and over. the exam isn’t until another month, so i still have plenty of time to study.

once i was ready, about fifteen minutes pass when my dorm room opens and my roommate f/n walks in.

“i’m so glad you agreed to go to this game with me” she said as she sat down

“yeah, well, figured it was time i get out and do something.

“come on,” she grabs my hand and heads towards the door. “we need to get going now if we want good seats.” i lock the door behind me on our way out and we’re on our way to the rink.

when we arrive, there’s already a good amount of people here.

“looks like everyone and their mom is already here,” she says, causing me to laugh. we get out and head inside.

“wait, don’t you have to buy tickets?”

“i already bought them” i pause and look at her

“you were going to make me go even if i said no, weren’t you?” she nods and i playfully roll my eyes, following her into the stands. she managed to get us two good seats by the penalty box. perks of student discount.

today, michigan was playing boston so this was going to be a good game. we arrived early enough, per f/n's request, to “watch them practice.” but i know she just wants a front row seat to eye candy.

this one guy who kept skating past us locked eyes with me a couple times. from what i could see, he was a nice-looking guy.

“number 43 is totally eye-balling you,” f/n leans in and whispers to me.

“do you know his name?” i ask back and she shakes her head no. for a second, he turns, and i see the name ‘hughes’ across his back. she gasps.

“i do know him! he’s in my stats class. smart as hell, too” she nudges me at the last part and a small smile is on my face.

“well what’s his name?”

“quinn” i nod and continue to watch him skate around gracefully as he shoots a couple of warm up pucks in the net. i check my phone for a brief second and f/n starts hitting my arm excitedly. i give her a puzzled look.

“he’s coming over here,” she whispers and i look up to see that, sure enough, he’s skating in my direction. he comes to a halt in front of the tempered glass and he smiles at me.

“can you catch?” i let out a small laugh, nodding regardless. he tosses a puck over the glass and i catch it. he gives me a wink then skates away. i turn it over and scoff.

“that smooth fucker”

“what?” f/n looks over my shoulder and i show her the puck.

it’s halfway through the first period when quinn scores a goal. his next actions are what get to me. after his little celly he does, he skates by and points at me.

“he just fucking made a goal for you,” she says. “y/n, if you don’t make a move, i fucking will. god damn, what does a girl need to do to get laid around here? apparently nothing.” i laugh at her rambling and the game resumes after quinn's goal.

sometime in the second, one of michigan's players was penalized and sent to the box.

"what the actual hell? boston cross-checked one of our players. but let's just kiss their ass because they're angels and can do no wrong." i say, quite upset with the uncalled penalty. i hear a deep laugh and look to my right and see the player on our team that was sent to the box laughing.

"give them hell"

"if the ref doesn't, i sure will" he laughs again

"i'm will"

"y/n" the two minutes then end and will waves goodbye before heading back onto the ice.

"he seemed nice," f/n says and i look at her

"you want him, don't you?"

"what gave it away?"

"everything," i say and turn back to watching the game.

michigan ended up winning and f/n and i screamed our lungs out at the victory. while we were getting up to leave, will skated over and tapped on the glass. i looked up and he pointed in the direction of their locker rooms.

"i was told to tell you to wait out by the locker room" he then skates off and f/n shakes my arm excitedly.

"i bet it was mr. scored-y/n-a-goal. he took one look at you and now he's addicted."

"please. i just met the guy"

"that's not stopping him, is it?" she gives me a look and then tells me she'll be waiting in the car listening to sad adele songs.

i weaved my way through the crowd, finally getting through the cluster of people. when i arrive where i need to be, there's a tall, what i'm assuming, security man standing there.

"can i help you?"

"yeah, uh, will told me someone wanted me to wait for them outside the locker room?" he doesn't budge which makes sense. he probably thinks i'm trying to get free eye candy.

"uh huh. and i'm beyonce" i squint at him and tilt my head to the side slightly.

"i don't remember beyonce having a moustache." i see his jaw clench and i cross my arms back, mirroring him.

"believe me or not, i was asked to be here."

"so was every other girl that tried to use that." i point a finger at him.

"listen pal-" i'm cut off by a door opening and quinn walks out and he looks between the guy and i. he takes in the security man's hard expression and laughs.

"relax, sully. she's here for me" he throws an arm around my shoulders and sully's face drops slightly. i smirk victoriously. quinn then looks at me, smiling softly.

"you got my message?" i nod

"come on, i've yet to hear your voice. but the way will said you were flaming boston, i need to hear you talk." i laugh and when i'm done, i speak.

"to be fair, boston deserved it," he laughs and a big smile is on his face.

"i could listen to you talk forever," he says and i shy away slightly.

"i never caught your name," he says

"y/n" he repeats it to himself and smiles.

"i can get used to saying that. say, y/n, are you free saturday at seven?"

"let me check my calendar," i pull out my phone, but before i even turn it on, i shove it back in my pocket. "yep. seems like i'm all yours"

"you won't regret it," he says, walking backwards to the exit, a dopey smile on his face.

"i better not, hughes!" i call out and shake my head, a smile on my face as i head to the car where f/n was waiting. as i approach the car, i can hear the faint tune of all i ask by adele playing and i let out a quiet laugh.

i knock on the passenger window and she jumps slightly, but looks at me, then unlocking the door. i slide in, immediately met with warmth.

"you stayed true to your word," i tell her and she nods, resting her head on the steering wheel. in the act of doing that, she accidentally laid her head on the horn and she was quick to bring her head back up.

"please tell me something happened so i didn't have this sad session for nothing." i laugh and nod

"he asked me on a date saturday." her eyes light up and her demeanor changes quickly.

"this is amazing for you! i'm so happy for you, y/n" i give her a soft smile and then break the silence.

"but don't worry, f/n. you'll always be my number one. still gotta stick to our plan on fleeing america and becoming the gay wine aunts." she nods

"damn straight. i refuse to let a man take you away from me." i laugh and shake my head.

"what's got you all smiley over there, huh?" i stand up and walk around the island and wrap my arms around his neck, looking into his eyes.

"and saying yes to that date is something i'll never regret for as long as i'm still breathing." he smiles and i place a hand on his cheek. he then dips his head down and gives me a kiss and when he pulls apart, he has a love-sick look in his eyes. i'm sure mine hold the same look.

after quinn cooked us dinner, we headed to bed. the two of us were just lying there in the dark, my head rested on his chest.

"marry me." quinn says, breaking the silence. it caught me off-guard and i sit up and look down at him. although it was dark in the room, the moonlight coming in through the curtains shone on his face, illuminating his features.

"you're serious?"

"as serious as i'll ever be" i lean down and pepper kisses all over his face and i can hear his laughs and feel his warm arms around me.

"i would love to marry you, quinn."

"is that a yes?"

quinn and i settled down after his impromptu proposal. it was around two in the morning and quinn was already asleep when i started to softly giggle.

"what is it?" his tone is laced with sleep and i laugh one more time before saying the ridiculous nickname i created for him.

how do you see so many shows so often? I want to start seeing more shows but I don’t know where to find really cheap tickets

This is my favorite question and the answer is actually not rush or lottery. I never pay full-price for anything unless it's a very rare circumstance (like the Follies concert where I didn't care what I paid so long as I was in that room).

Here's what you need to do:

TDF: $35 yearly membership fee (first year only, after that it's $40) for the best discounts across NYC theatre. Tickets cost between ~$11-$60, depending on the class, and seats are assigned by the box office. I've been able to sit prime orchestra in seats costing hundreds for about $60. It's gotten a little pricier over the years (used to be $54 for a Broadway musical back in 2019, now it's $63, including fees). Membership is closed to specific groups/communities, but nearly everyone is eligible. It pays for itself within a show or two, so it's worth it.

Age-based discounts: the non-profit Broadway companies all have some sort of "30 under X" discount for young theatergoers. Many off-Broadway companies have really great student/under 30 deals too if you just do some searching before you buy.

Second Stage is "30 under 30" and I've found that by buying the season subscription (five shows for $150, so same price as single ticket sales), I get access to much better seating choices. Can be ordered online or at box office (sans fees). The shows are a mix of two Broadway, and two or three off-Broadway, and possibly a small fringe show thrown in depending on the season. Last season it was two Broadway and three off.

MTC is "30 under 35" and consistently has great shows. Can be ordered online or at box office (sans fees). The MTC's theatre (Friedman) has the most comfortable mezzanine seats in all of Broadway. Plush, high back, wide. It's luxury. And the side seating has pretty good sightlines, so there's not a bad seat.

Roundabout has the most generous one at "30 under 40" with their HipTix program, and this also eschews any fees even when ordering online. It's the easiest out of the three, though slightly more restrictive in what seats are offered. Never sit in the rear mezzanine of either the Todd Haimes or Studio 54 theatres. Bad times for very different reasons. Go side orchestra every time.

All three of these programs allow two tickets per show, though some won't allow guests of any age and some will.

Comp Tickets: There are a few paid programs you can join to get access to free (with a $5 per-show ticket fee) tickets. Last year I did TheatremaniaGold for $80, and this year WillCallClub for $15. Neither are really worth it, if you ask me. Most of the shows are the weird little fringe things that aren't selling, and while that may be fun, it doesn't really end up being great if you want to see Broadway unless it's a Big Flop. The Broadway shows I've seen listed include: Bad Cinderella, The Shark is Broken, and Lempicka, to name a few.

I'm also somehow on some comp lists where I get emails every now and then to see shows for free. I cannot tell you how to get on these lists, because I didn't do anything. It just happened. That's how I got to see Kimberly Akimbo so many times for free.

In-Person Box Office: If I have to get a ticket outside of these avenues, I always go to the box office to save on the online fees, which can be anywhere from $9 to $17, and that's money I want for me, not the predatory sites like telecharge and ticketmaster.

NYU ScholasTix: As an NYU alumnus, I get access to the school's discount program, but I've found the tickets aren't that discounted, and the seats are bad. And also you have to go all the way downtown to the NYU box office at Skirball Center to pick them up instead of going to the theatre box office before showtime. I hate it, and it's inaccessible, and the accessibility service is garbage, so I don't do this unless there are no other options (i.e. really popular Broadway play that won't ever be on TDF). Many city schools have similar programs, and you should definitely check because they don't advertise well.

Rush/Lottery: Every now and then, I'll do a digital lottery or rush. I don't do it in person because I just can't with my knees. Also, I have an adult job and can't just stand around the box office at ten in the morning. Shubert Broadway shows use the telecharge rush system. Jujamcyn/Ambassador use Lucky Seat for lottery only. Nederlander shows use Broadway Direct. Then there's the off-Broadway companies and non-profits that use the TodayTix app, and that one's a bitch to win, but hey, it's possible.

Seatplan: If you're like me and see too much Broadway, you can start uploading seat pictures to SeatPlan to earn rewards points. Every 4,400 points, and you get a free $50 telecharge gift card. Depending on how many points you earn per show (between 40-120), you can get a card every 36-50 shows, so that's easily one a year for me.

Other programs I don't use include:

The Theatr app, which is a new thing where people can sell tickets their not using either at cost or discounted, so it's never a situation where resellers profit. Anyone trying to sell fraudulently is immediately removed, and their customer service is pretty quick on the trigger.

TKTS booths at Times Square and at Lincoln Center. Those are day-of tickets usually going for 30-70% off depending on the show. I've gotten tickets through them before, but I don't stand in lines anymore. It's decent for the tourists though.

so, you want to get rich quick?

to get rich quick anon, here’s some hypothetical strategies (I DO NOT ENDORSE WHAT I SAY BELOW). I’ll assume for the sake of this that you aren’t an artist or skinmaker, most of your FR friends are in the same class of “wealth” in dragon capitalism, and you likely have a couple thousand gems in your vault. (Also assuming normal non conquest push non NOTN profiteering hours). You unfortunately need to be rich first to get richer and also have very thick skin when it comes to haggling and various unethical things.

mildly unethical but not illegal: 1) scout out the sales/auctions threads, and underbid for dragons (low digits are a good place to start. see 7 digit dragons. better than g1s for ROI, but buyer’s market is kinda scuffed, this is a patience game) or find liquidating threads and pick up as many high value easy to liquidate things for as low as possible. buy them in bulk and people will be more likely to knock the price down.

2) sell sell sell. anything in your hoard or pair that isn’t being used and is easy to sell, get rid of it. hibden items are a hassle but some of the low tier unlock items can fetch quite the price. do your research and don’t waste time trying to sell every little thing, but have as much different stuff listed on the AH as possible. don’t overlist items, do corner the market on single piece apparel items that are a little fancy (find them on the MP during discount price)

illegal, try at your own risk: with multis: 1) get an earth multi for dom discount, convert your gems to treasure @1:1000, then buy a ton of gene scrolls to sell on the AH. DO RESEARCH FIRST ON WHAT THE BEST MARGINS ARE FOR FLIPPING. this is probably the single easiest way to make money on fr period.

2) use your dailies to gather for specific hibden items, don’t sell all at once because you’ll inflate the market and the price goes down, but trickle in a couple listings at a time.

3) buy multiple spare inventory crates and sell them later.

scams and frauds (please don’t do any of these i would be very sad):

1) get involved in dominance, trickle funds from battles or other organizations into your own coffers, or run events and hold onto a portion of the proceeds. fudge spreadsheets. it helps to be integrated into in flight events.

2) run scam raffles with middle-high ticket items, nothing super expensive, but decently interesting. (nothing over a couple kg for your grand prize as anything higher than that attracts more interest than you’d like.). make it legit, and you can have smaller prizes that you actually hand out, but the big ticket prize is never distributed. (multis will help increase legitimacy, just use common sense.)

3) literally just RMT if you have spare dollars to throw into the void. it helps to have “connections.”

4) reconsider your decisions. this is a game, and what you have will never be enough if you compare it to others.

FR is not a job, it is not an obligation, and “getting rich quick” will always come at the expense of others. you’re just as likely to be banned or found obnoxious for this kind of stuff.

not sure if u answer asks on here but i was wondering what ur opinion was on the sheridan animation program? i just got accepted but since it’s twice as expensive as any of the schools near me (france), i wanted to know what you thought of the faculty, quality of the program, etc? it would be especially interesting to hear from you since my reasoning for going to the program is basically the same as the one you detailed in your q&a video (it will be easier to break into the american animation industry from the other side of the pond) & i wanted to know if after a couple years that sentiment still rang true or if the reality is more nuanced than that. I absolutely get the money concern. I'd say aspects of the program have improved since my #sheridansucks rants on twitter (some new part time profs actually know what they're doing, and the competent profs are generally pushing for change, as is the animation student council), but Sheridan's admin team and many of the full time professors haven't changed. Of these full time profs, 80% have never been in industry and the rest haven't been employed in animation in 20+ years; the info they have on industry is outdated or just plain wrong, and while impressionable first years may buy into it, after doing our internships over the summer and coming back for 4th year, their "the industry is just as hard as doing 5+ assignments a week, you SHOULD be pulling all nighters, we're preparing you for industry" bullshit doesn't fly. The program is horribly designed (the amount of credits is that of a 5-year program, crammed into 4 years), they're riding on grads' reputation alone at this point (taking in talented students and claiming credit for how good they are when most of us learn independently and are this good due to external courses we take, or simply practice), and I'd go so far as to call a few of the classes we take - completely useless. Many of my friends, who are domestic students, have dropped out and are now thriving in industry, because a degree really doesn't matter in this line of work.

That said, I've heard similar things about every North American art school under the sun. Also, Sheridan was, and continues to be, the best option for me as an international. Getting a degree here means I'm almost 100% guaranteed a Canadian work permit (a PGWP), plus between some of the practical knowledge I got taught (specifically by one of the part time rigging professors), and my peers' help/connections, I have already had two industry jobs before graduating. I'd always advise school over no school if you can afford it, for connections' sake - my wonderful peers aside, Sheridan has given us many discounts on tickets to networking events/festivals like OIAF and TAAFI, which have helped me land my current job, for example, and many local studios will come in for networking/recruiting talks. There is also an internship component, which the school helps you get, so by the time you've graduated you already have industry experience and studio contacts in some capacity.

It really depends on what opportunities you already have available to you in Canada. If you're an international, I would say it's helpful, and even though that help has come primarily from my peers and part time profs, that's still better than nothing for me, plus - ✨work permit✨

Under Amtrak’s new fare structure, introduced Wednesday [October 25th 2023], you can now travel from Philadelphia to New York City for as low as $19. While Amtrak used to offer three different kinds of ticket options for a seat — the Saver, Value, and Flexible— it will offer two going forward. The new fare model includes: the Flex option which is fully refundable and gives travelers the flexibility to change their travel without fees, and a Value option that offers less flexibility, but is cheaper and travelers can get a 75% refund if canceled. “This streamlined fare structure with more affordable and flexible fares is part of Amtrak’s continued commitment to upgrading the customer experience at every step along their journey,” said Roger Harris, Amtrak president, in a statement. The changes apply to both coach tickets and Acela business class. Acela first-class tickets and non-Acela business-class tickets will not be affected by the new model as they were already fully refundable and flexible. The change comes in light of customer research Amtrak has been conducting. It was confusing for customers to have two distinct discount options — Value and Saver — with slightly different cancellation and change conditions, said W. Kyle Anderson, a representative for Amtrak. The difference in price between a low-cost ticket and a flexible ticket was also a lot larger, customers said, so fewer purchased that option. With the new structure, customers traveling from Philadelphia to New York can buy tickets starting at $19 if they choose the low-cost Value option or $21 if they want more flexibility. september 2024 bookkeeping - the first half

i've moved abroad! i'll be here for a few months and my finances are in absolute shambles so i've decided to make this a bi-weekly occasion. or maybe even weekly, we'll see.

what i spent

in total i've spent: 292.34€. for two weeks not that bad, about 150€ a week is an ok budget i think now that i live alone and am trying to organize my life. i would still like to bring it down to 100€ so let's see where i can improve.

food: 61.38€ (eating out) + 45.62€

here eating out is relatively cheap (it comes to about 5€ per meal) and groceries are expensive, as you can see.

i ate out 11 times in two weeks (+ 3 cafes). mostly because we were out and about visiting places and had to eat there but there were a couple of times that i could have avoided, like going to cafes/bubble tea. it happened 3 times, so for maybe a total of 10€ but i've discovered that i don't even like bubble tea here so i should just not go there anymore.

i've spent a lot on groceries in one go but it should last me a long enough time (lots of prepackaged meals).

object purchases: 171.53€

all of this stuff was unavoidable (even if it doesn't feel like it seeing it totaled up). there were 2 souvenirs, which i could have avoided but like... i'm here. i will get a couple of souvenirs i also refrained from buying a third one, so i'm at least proud of that.

in any case, these are all one time purchases and i won't need to worry about getting these objects for a long time.

i could have gotten some of this stuff tax free but i had forgotten my passport. so next time i should remember to bring my passport.

actually, one thing i do regret is that i tried to take my id photo at a photoboot because it was less expensive, but they rejected it and i'll have to go to a professional studio next week anyway. yikes.

i have booked the professional photo id, which will come to about 20€ (ugh). i'm also going to a baseball game but i'm still not sure how much that will cost. and we have planned a one day trip for tomorrow. and i'm going out in one hour and will probably have lunch and dinner out (but it should be street food so less expensive so maybe 8€?).

i will also need to charge my transportation card, which is going to be a monthly expense (42€ but i will get a discount later on).

what i want to do is 1. not get any bubble tea but rather get some water if i'm feeling too warm. 2, pick the least expensive option at the cafeteria i need to go to when i'm on campus. 3, not go out just for the sake of going out even if we are visiting places i've already been to. i should stay at home and eat my groceries.

Ayup.  And the reason for this is the same reason that your local library’s ebook collection may seem a bit disappointing or frustrating.  It all comes down to an aspect of US copyright law called First Sale Doctrine.  

When you buy a physical copy of an information object--a printed book, a VHS tape, a vinyl record--your purchase includes the right to sell, lend, rent out, or otherwise share that particular copy.  You emphatically do not have the right to produce and share additional copies, and in the case of recordings, there are  limitations on your right to play that recording for an audience*, but that individual copy can pass through any number of hands without further need to consult--or pay--the copyright owner.   Just like how if you buy a car, or a table, or a screwdriver, you can sell, lend, or rent it to another person without involving the manufacturer, or the store you bought it from, in any way.  

(*A few friends in your living room, generally OK, selling tickets to show it in an auditorium, definitely not OK, and for most of the territory in between, you’d be best off asking a copyright lawyer.)

Digital information technology, on the other hand, broke the cycle.  While it made piracy much easier and more widespread, it also provided an opportunity to do what content owners had wanted to do with every previous information technology upgrade, and put a meter on legitimate sharing.   

A library can buy a physical copy of a book anywhere, and for the same price, that an individual person would buy it.  There are specialized outlets that work with libraries, and offer various perks and extra services to appeal to that market, but at my previous job, we  bought 95% of our print books from Amazon.  We did our processing in-house, and our annual book-buying budget wasn’t enough to get us into a discount tier that would net us better prices than Amazon offers to the general public, so we just went with that.  

It’s free the regular retail price and the cops copyright lawyers employed by the publisher can’t stop you.  They have tried.  

And Blockbuster, and the original, DVD-based version of Netflix, operated under pretty much the same principle.  (Netflix did end up doing some sort of deal with the major studios where they paid a bit extra for special Netflix-only copies of their movies, and in return the studios refrained from taking another whack at abolishing First Sale doctrine, but Netflix had the upper hand in that negotiation.)  The movie studios never liked it much, but they were backed into a corner on it.  

But when you pay for a digital copy of a book, movie, song, or whatever, you’re actually licensing it, not buying it, and therefore First Sale Doctrine never kicks in.  Some platforms allow a certain amount of peer-to-peer sharing as a way of disincentivizing piracy--like how you can lend Kindle books to 1 other person at a time--but if you want to do it on a large scale, like a library does, or like video rental places used to do with tapes and DVDs, you have to acquire a license that lets you do that.  And the owner of the content can charge as much as they want for that--or choose not to issue that type of license at all, or issue such a license exclusively to one party; whatever they decide is to their best advantage.  

And that’s why streaming platforms are rapidly turning into silos, and why the big entertainment conglomerates would just as soon get out of the business of encoding their wares into physical products that you can buy.
